Then they were forced to sell everything off to create competition so the railways, gas, electricity, water etc were all sold off. Now we are ripped off left right and centre and the services particularly in rail are less good and more expensive. I gave examples of the ridiculous costs of getting around the country. If you want to believe that capitalism is the answer to everything then kid yourself that it is. And before you start on about commie bastards etc at no point have I said we should live in a communist state. Either extreme doesn't really work and we are only talking about the railways which is essentially just a public transport system. I do not care if you believe it or not but the fact remains that it works best when it is all owned and subsidised by government. Frankly I'd rather see my taxes go into something green like getting people onto public transport and out of their cars than some of these other stupid initiatives they waste billions on.

I believe in user fees no matter who runs a service, and not tax moneys being used, nor to subsidized to lower riders cost. But it is the capitalist way to make everything only paid for by clients/customers. User fees can't cover what is needed to run an efficient railway network and service which is what has been said from the start. I can't think of any other ways to say it is costly and ineffective. I give up. You will not grasp it and I don't care.
