The troubled rail franchise, currently run by National Express, is suffering from slumping passenger numbers and is expected to have lost £20m in the first half of the year. Ministers have already refused the company's requests for its contract with the government to be renegotiated. Existing operational staff will transfer to the new state company which will be set up to operate the route. All current services will continue and tickets will be honoured. Posts: 7993 Wed, 1-Jul-09 15:04:01 Bow to the Mistress	NO! The trains are hot, over crowded and over-priced and the delays caused by engineering works at the weekends and off peak week days are ridiculous!!!!! It should be a public service so the faresd can be regulated!

We have a subsidized Ferry system and fares set by state, in the Puget Sound area that the rest of the state has to pay for cost over runs..via higher gas taxes. If the government wants us out our cars and onto public transport then they need to subsidize rail travel, starting with the east coast line. I hear that the National Express franchise is not the only one perilously close to being handed back to the government. Better not hope the tories win the next election.

Posts: 7993 Thu, 2-Jul-09 11:00:35 Bow to the Mistress	I don't think they need to be subsidised, but they DO need regulation... if booking a ticket a fortnight in advance means it is 30% cheaper, they can obviously afford to do ALL fares at that price... i regularly get the train between london and clacton... i buy my ticket from the same rail provider on the day of travel each time... in the last 6 months that price has fluctuated between 25 and 45quid! With no apparent reason for this change. If the services were nationalised, they could bring somebody in to check the prices and regulate them so that standard fares were in place.. as it stands at the moment companies are charging whatever they feel like with nobody to step in and question it!

Government steps in to regulate for the country-wide service or we continue with each area of the country privately owning and charging what they feel like. I don't believe i mentioned once about luxury rides... spoken as somebody who uses public transport regularly, i don't believe anything would every make our transport in to a luxury ride... but the fares could be fairer than they are now and that will only come with regulation. Yet again, another english topic you can't get your head around.

It's not like any country has successfully run a privatised rail service. You have no idea what you are talking about Lance and it shows. It's fuck all to do with luxury. When it is subsidised and regulated by government it is efficent, affordable and used by more people. It is greener to the environment, it cuts down the number of car users etc etc. Oh for pity's sake. I don't know why I bother. It really is like dealing with a stubborn child who doesn't listen to a word it is told. I'm not repeating myself and frankly I'm sick to death of it on every damn topic. The riders pay for their tickets but the ticket money will not provide enough funds to cover cost of running it, let alone maintenance hence it will have to subsidized. [Non Users having to pay]. I haven't once said i want government subsidisation.. please find where i have.. i said i wanted it under government control in order to regulate national fares.. HOWEVER if it were to be tax payer funded, i wouldn't have much of a problem with that... point being that our healthcare system is one of the best in the world and that's paid for by taxes. You being unfortunate enough to have been born in the states means you will never truly grasp the concept of this as you lot have to have insurance for everything. i really do hate posting with you, it's like banging you head against a brick wall and not nearly as much fun. I shan't be replying to this thread anymore.

It was me who is in favour of it going back to how it was so we can have an equal system to countries like France and Holland etc. A cost effective greener mode of transport available to all and used by all which cuts down the number of road users because it is actually a viable alternative to the rip offs we have in this country. It is cheaper to fly to Scotland than it is to take a train. You can go away on Holiday for a week in the med for what it costs to buy a return ticket to Scotland. Privatisation has not worked.

There are Four ways to run and pay for a service [trains] Private company, owned, where owner maintains and operates using only funds from ticket sales Ticket prices are often set by Gov and raised only when Co can show need. Private owned where owner maintains and operates using funds from ticket sales and a government subtenancy usually more regs. Subtenancy comes from taxes paid by all. Usually the ticket prices are set by a gov agency. and more often the subtenancy is raised instead of ticket prices. Government owned where Gov maintains and operates using only funds from ticket sales Government owned where Gov maintains and operates using funds from reduced price ticket sales and a Subtenancy from taxes paid by all. My argument is for Ticket payers pay all the cost with no further subtenancy from taxes./Gov. Only users pay non users don't The problem with a government ran service, is they always fall back on the Subtenancy instead of raising prices/fares to cover costs.
